Recreation. Activation. Reactivation.
Cedarhurst Dementia Care Home
Enjoying a healthy and active life is important which is why the Recreation. Activation. Reactivation Department within Cedarhurst offers programming 7 days a week, with a variety of activities focused on the residents’ interests and follows our relational dementia care model.
A picture is worth a thousand words …
From ageless art sessions to parties to cognitive therapy, we do it all for our residents to help enrich their life through a host of social activities, educational programs, entertainment and good old-fashioned fun.

What are the benefits of relational dementia care?
Our vision is for everyone involved in order to be happier and healthier – residents, families and staff. How do we measure that? Some changes will be anecdotal, but they will be easy to see and hear - Two people dancing down the hall. A beautiful piano duet. Laughter. A tray of chocolate chip cookies. A smile where one never existed before. Two people holding hands.

Move. Mingle. Memories
Therapeutic recreation focuses on activities, adaptations, and reactivation which is why all programs are designed to promote social interaction and incite the mind. Activities cater to all areas in order to promote total well-being –
- music and art/crafts,
- cognitive therapy,
- pet therapy,
- intergenerational program,
- festive social gatherings,
- cultural and spiritual activities,
- intellectual discussions and games for everyone with evidence-based practices that promote brain health,
- physical exercises.
All activities that can help recall the fondest of memories, enhance well-being, creativity, and all suited to each resident's abilities and interests.

Intergenerational Program within a Dementia Care Home: Bridging the Gap
Intergenerational Programs (IG) have been utilized for their ability to foster connections between different age groups thus reducing stereotypes, promote new learning between generations, allowing youth to feel more comfortable around older people with dementia while addressing social isolation concerns.
EAHI has partnered with community schools to engage youth in Cedarhurst’s Intergenerational Program. The one-on-one program is specifically designed for high school students come together to learn from each other and participate in enjoyable activities, such as adopting a ‘grandma program’, puzzles, checkers, active games, art sessions, music therapy, and other creative ways to encourage and promote togetherness.
